It's time for a couple more restaurant reviews - it's been a while !

First up is Mama Liveri's Italian Bistro. This authentic family owned bistro is located next to Trader Joe's in Palm Desert. Very close to Rancho Mirage, it's in a convenient shopping area off of Fred Waring Drive. They are famous for their new york pizza but we decided to try the egg plant parmesan and a plate of spaghetti and meat balls. Both were tasty. Combined with the ambiance and decor, we will return. I'm anxious to compare their pizza with our favorite (Papa Dan's).

Next up is Roc's Fire House Grill in Palm Desert. You might remember them from their old location on El Paseo. Primarily a bar, it was famous for the little red fire truck that sat out by the curb. They moved due to the expansion of 'The Gardens' on El Paseo (which is in a stalled status). Anyway, the new location is on Cook Street, very close to the I 10. It's overlooking the intersection of Cook and Bob Hope in the new shopping center. We found it to be a great place with excellent food, a shiny new building and a comfortable atmosphere. We had the prime rib tacos and tortilla soup. Both were great ! We will definitely be going back.

Championship Course: October 5th - November 6th
Challenge Course: October 26th - November 21st

Both courses will be closed between 10/26/09 and 11/6/09.

Palm Valley Fitness Center

Did you know that Palm Valley Country Club has a huge fitness center ?

Big enough to rival the large commercial gyms, the fitness center has just about every workout machine you can think of. In addition there is a huge room full of treadmill's, elliptical's and StairMaster's. There are weight rooms, racquet ball courts and many other options.

You can take a class, work out with a trainer or just do your own thing. It's a great place to work off the calories !

Tennis

A lot of the interesting aspects of life at Palm Valley Country Club surround the golf courses and practice facilities. But, did you know that Palm Valley also has an excellent tennis program ?

There are a total of 16 championship tennis courts (10 lighted for night play), a spacious tennis clubhouse and a complete tennis pro shop. There is also a comfortable tennis lounge and an observation patio where you can relax, socialize with friends, and view the play on the stadium court. You can even tune your game with the sophisticated video tape system.

All of this is available should you stay in our beautifully remodeled condo with our Platinum membership.

Burger Anyone ?

We were in one of those moods the other day, and only a great burger would satisfy us.

We finally tried Grill-A-Burger in Palm Desert. Guess what - we were satisfied (and pleasantly surprised) !

If you are hungry for a great burger, this is the place. With over 20 burgers to pick from, you won't be disappointed. The burgers are hand crafted and grilled to order with freshly baked buns. We both had the standard cheeseburger, and it was delicious.

The menu also has "haute dogs", several salads, sandwiches and fountain drinks.

It's located in the Bristol Farms Plaza, at the corner of Country Club and Monterey.

Discount Golf Tee Times

I've been asked several times about how or where to find discounted tee times at other courses besides Palm Valley Country Club. There are two sites that look interesting - EZLinks.com and StandByGolf.com.

I used StandByGolf several years ago and had no problems. I haven't used EZLinks.com, but it looks interesting. They have several courses listed in the Coachella Valley depending on the day of the week. They have a 'Name Your Price' feature that might be a great way to get a discount.

2009 Season Opening Report

Greetings ! The high season is upon us so I thought I'd make a quick report on the status of Palm Valley Country Club.

I'm happy to report that the re-model of Bogies Grill is complete. The new look features dark tile floors and a much more open feel. Quite an improvement. It is open from 7AM to 4PM daily.

The re-seeding of both courses is complete. The courses are lush and green, and against the bright blue skies they are quite a site. Here is a photo from the patio (although my old camera really doesn't do it justice).

The winter color has been planted throughout the grounds and it looks like paradise !

The golf Pro Shop is fully stocked with new merchandise, the practice facilities are in great shape and we are ready for a great winter.

Yellow Basket - Palm Desert

While dining at our favorite pizza place last weekend (Papa Dan's) we were visiting with a couple that asked if we had tried the new "Yellow Basket Char Broiler" yet. They recommended it as a place for breakfast.

We took their advice and went for breakfast the next morning. We were pleasantly surprised ! It looks like a fast food diner, yet is very clean and roomy. We found the food very tasty and very reasonably priced. The breakfast menu includes eggs, pancakes, omelets, steak, and much more. If you are looking for a simple and easy place for breakfast, give it a try.

It's located in the new Wal Mart center on Monterey Ave, just south of I10.

Classic Club is Out

Winter Re-Seeding

As you may know, this is the best time of year for the bermuda greens and fairways. They love the heat and flourish this time of year. However, winter re-seeding is coming and the schedule at Palm Valley Country Club is as follows;

Challenge Course - closed 9/15/08, re-opens on 10/18/08.
Championship Course - closed 10/6/08, re-opens 11/8/08.

Both courses closed from 10/6/08 - 10/18/08.

Golf Course Update

For those of you interested in keeping up with happenings at Palm Valley Country Club, the following golf course update was announced this week;

All greens on the Championship Course will be expanded this summer
Fairway bunkers on both courses will be leveled
Cart path exits and entrances on the Challenge Course will be leveled

Of course, this will be in addition to the normal winter re-seeding that will take place in the fall. I'll post those dates when I find out what they are.

Rental Agencies

There has been a lot of noise lately about rental agencies in the desert. I've seen comments from many people about the terrible experiences they have had with dirty rentals, unresponsive rental firms and many other issues.

We rent our Palm Valley Country Club condo directly to our guests. We do this so that we can enhance your rental experience and keep an eye on the place to make sure it stays in tip-top condition. We have put a significant amount of effort and money into the complete remodel that was recently finished. Unlike the rental agencies, this is not just a "rental" to us, but is our home away from home.

Restaurant Rankings

Not sure I buy all of it. Many of the places listed are nationwide chains (e.g. Starbucks). Missing from the list are excellent places such as Sirocco (in the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa - Indian Wells). At least they mentioned Sullivan's Steak House and Papa Dan's in Palm Desert.

They neglected Armondo's Mexican food on El Paseo - home of the killer margarita. Oh well, at least they have given us some new places to try.

Municipal Golf Courses

Did you know that some of the best golf in the Coachella Valley can be found at municipal golf courses ?

The cities of Palm Desert, La Quinta and Indian Wells have spent millions of dollars in the last few years to construct high-quality courses to attract the golfing dollar. According to a recent article in Golfweek magazine, the city of Indian Wells has spent $70 million to rebuild their two city owned courses. The courses hosted the LG Skins Game over Thanksgiving weekend last year. High season green fee's are around $195.

La Quinta's Silverrock and Palm Desert's Desert Willow are the other new municipal courses in the valley that now boasts more than 120 golf courses. I can speak from personal experience that Desert Willow is a quality course and a lot of fun to play. They also have a beautiful club house and a restaurant that is worth a try.

La Quinta Restaurant Update

We decided to try a couple of restaurants in La Quinta this time. Both of these places are within 10-15 minutes of our Palm Valley Country Club condo.

First up was dinner at Arnold Palmer's.

We really enjoyed the cozy, casual - yet elegant - warm atmosphere here. The walls are covered with photo's of Arnie and related golf memorabilia. One of the small points we liked was, unlike other restaurants, tables for two were not jammed together. The food was great. Most entree's seemed to be in the $20 - $30 range. We had two beef dishes that were very tasty. The only negative was the elevated sound level in our dining room. Overall, it's well worth a try if you haven't been.

Next was breakfast at La Quinta Baking Co.

What a wonderful surprise this was ! We had a delicious breakfast that included fresh pastries. The lunch and dinner menu's look great as well. We will make this a regular stop from now on ! It's located in the Von's shopping center on the south side of Hwy 111, just west of the intersection of Hwy 111 and Washington.

New Development in Palm Desert

A new Fairmont Hotel is to be bulit near the Classic Club in Palm Desert. Announced last week in the local paper, the $200 million hotel and adjoining master planned community will be built near the I-10 and Cook St. area. Ground is to be broken in 2009 for the 14 story luxury hotel. The site will include retail and office complexes as well.

Since this development will be just a few minutes away from our Palm Valley Country Club condo, it should provide more first class shopping and dining opportunities for our guests, yet be far enough way to have no impact on the peace and tranquility of Palm Valley Country Club.

It's hard enough to visit all the wonderful restaurants and shopping in the Palm Springs area, and I guess we'll have a few more choices once the project is complete.

Winter in Palm Desert

Just got back from a quick weekend stay at our Palm Valley Country Club golf condo. It's officially winter in the Desert !

The Championship course at Palm Valley Country Club is as beautiful as ever ! It was a bit windy, but it was fun to play golf while watching the storm dump snow on the mountains just a few miles away. When the clouds lifted periodically, the snow became visible at very low elevations. In any other place, playing golf would have been impossible in that kind of weather. In Palm Desert, you just put on a windshirt to fight off those frigid low-60's temperatures ! The clouds just pile-up against the mountains and leave the valley nice and dry. It would have been a very interesting day to take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway !

Armando's Dakota Bar & Grill on El Paseo was our choice for dinner once again. We enjoyed it so much last time we had to go back for more.

Bob Hope Chrysler Classic

Coming to Palm Springs, Palm Desert or La Quinta for the big PGA Tour event ?

This year the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is being held January 14 - 20 at four local golf courses. Last year's tournament introduced a new Palm Desert course to the golfing world, and this year's tournament will do the same. In 2007, The Classic Club in Palm Desert became the first new golf course in the rotation in recent memory. In 2008, Silver Rock Resort in La Quinta will join the tournament. La Quinta Country Club and PGA West make-up the other tournament venues.

Sunday's final round will be held at The Classic Club, which is less than 10 minutes from our Palm Desert Vacation Golf Condo. If you are going to be in the area for the tournament, make sure to check our other posts here in this blog for visitor information.

Palm Desert Restaurants - New Reviews

Finally got a chance to eat at Armando's Bar & Grill on El Paseo. After having several recommendations, we just had to try it.

For Mexican food this is the place to go. The Tamales and Chile Relleno's were fantastic ! And the Margarita's - WOW !

I can definitely recommend a visit...

If you want a very casual, "down home" breakfast try Keedy's on Hwy 111. Nothing fancy, but extremely popular with the locals. We had normal breakfast items and everything was well prepared and tasty. We've heard good things about lunch there also.

I thought I'd add a comment re. golf, spa and tennis access and renting a vacation home.

Whether you rent our Palm Valley Country Club golf condo or not, you need to make sure that you will actually be able to play where you are renting. Some Country Clubs have restrictive access rules re. non-member tenants. A word of advice - make sure you check first !

Our "Platinum" membership at Palm Valley Country Club allows for unlimited play of both private golf courses as well as full tennis, spa and use of the golf practice facilites. Even at Palm Valley Country Club, the membership level of the unit you are interested in may not allow you to enjoy the activities you were planning on. There are several membership levels, but only the "Platinum" level allows for unlimited access to all facilites. Guest fees do apply at all membership levels.

Palm Desert | Palm Springs Restaurants !!

We have had several questions on restaurant recommendations, so I thought I'd go ahead and start a list. Feel free to add your comments or recommendations. I will add to this list as we try new places and attempt to play food critic.

With that, our newest addition to the list is Sullivan's Steakhouse in Palm Desert. Our party of four all enjoyed our dinners very much. Steaks were cooked perfectly, crab cakes and deserts were fantastic. Very popular place. We WILL be going back.

I also want to mention that the restaurants here at Palm Valley Country Club are worth trying. Breakfast and Lunch at Bogie's Diner has been good. We have not had a dinner in the dining room yet, but I've heard the Friday night pasta night is great.

Palm Valley Country Club winter re-seeding is complete !

We just returned from spending the weekend at the condo in Palm Desert. I'm happy to report that the winter re-seeding is a complete success at Palm Valley Country Club !

Both golf courses look beautiful. They now look like only desert courses can - lush and bright green with those beautiful mountain views. I played a round on the Challenge course and enjoyed every minute of it. Score wasn't too bad....

We attended the Palm Valley Country Club "Season Opening" BBQ and everyone seemed very happy and excited to be there. I'll have to remember to take my camera next time so I can share some photos here in the new blog. We also ate at Sullivan's in Palm Desert for the first time. Had a great steak dinner.

On another note, the last piece of our re-model is now complete. We added a nice new roll-up garage door last month. All of our guests will receive access codes and are welcome to use it. We'll update the picture on our Palm Desert vacation condo website soon.
